GOOD MONDAY AFTERNOON, PORTLAND! Back to the grind, I'm afraid. So let's grind out some headlines.
IN LOCAL NEWS:
• The Portland Thorns announced Monday that the club has hired former assistant Mike Norris as its new head coach. Norris came to Portland to serve as an assistant on former manager Rhian Wilkinson's staff last year, and has now been promoted in the midst of an exceptionally tumultuous period for the club. Here's more on the hire.

• The city of Portland has lost three of its five lobbyists at the state legislature in Salem just over a week before a legislative session that will have a significant impact on the city is set to begin. Eric Noll, Ricardo Lujan-Valerio and Dominique Rossi have all reportedly left the city or are about to depart.
• A nice piece of recognition today for former Oregon running back LaMichael James, who will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December in Las Vegas as a member of the Class of 2023. James was a Heisman Trophy finalist in Eugene and went on to play for two teams across four NFL seasons.

IN NATIONAL/WORLD NEWS:
• The fallout over this weekend's attempted insurrection in Brazil continued on Monday, with some 1,500 insurrectionists detained and leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva vowing to "punish" the coup-plotters. Lula had just been sworn in for his third term as president on New Year's Day.
Wild how Brazil was able to arrest so many people right away while the US, which has a domestic police force larger than most nations’ militaries, is relying on social media & concerned citizens to help ID people on video lmao

• The attack on Brazilian democracy was prompted, at least in part, by the refusal of former President Jair Bolsonaro to concede defeat to Lula after last year's election. Bolsonaro has been camped out in Florida since Lula took office, possibly to avoid prosecution, and on Monday he was reportedly admitted to a hospital there.
• Kevin McCarthy was repeatedly humiliated in public, but made deals and ultimately triumphed in his quest to become Speaker of the House. His reward? Trying to wrangle the votes he needs follow through on one of his promises and pass a new House rules package that would empower the group of far right members who nearly tanked his leadership bid last week. Fun!

• The US attorney in Chicago is reviewing potentially classified documents taken from the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, with a number of those documents taken from President Joe Biden's vice presidential office at the center. The location of the potentially classified documents was reportedly identified by Biden's personal attorneys in November.
• The world's best restaurant, Copenhagen's Noma, is closing its doors for regular service at the end of next year amid a flurry of accusations about the toxicity of its workplace culture. The three-Michelin-star restaurant will then be turned into a food laboratory.
• Finally... brace yourselves.
